Standby (offline) topology is designed to deliver backup power as soon as input power is lost. In this design, the load normally runs off the incoming AC supply while the inverter and battery sit in reserve. When a power loss or abnormal condition is detected, a fast transfer switch immediately routes the load to the inverter powered by the battery, providing rapid backup power. The other designs work differently: online (double conversion) continuously powers the load through an inverter, so there isn’t a switch-over event to battery; line-interactive uses a voltage-regulating transformer and will switch to battery during outages with a short delay; rotary relies on a generator setup that takes time to start. Thus, standby is the best match for immediate backup by switching to battery without delay.
